About Helen Sharwood

Before commencing private practice, I gained valuable counselling experience working for the NSW Department of Education as a school counsellor employed in various areas of Sydney assisting adolescents and their families to manage complex issues such as: transitions from non-English speaking countries; peer pressure; bullying; mental health issues; and learning difficulties.

When I subsequently transitioned to private practice the breadth of this early experience assisted me to better understand problems adult clients were facing at work and in their personal relationships.

I place great value on the power of a collaborative relationship where mutual trust and respect can prosper. In particular, I find that active listening, validation and empathy can create a safe and caring environment in which clients’ needs and wishes are able to be better understood. I strongly believe in the ability of each individual to work through their issues and make good decisions. During and after therapy sessions, I value all feedback from clients whether positive or otherwise.

I enjoy travel, reading, gym, art, meditation, and music.
